Dog-friendly yard house in Mardakan: breeds, fence, safety

A dog owner looks at three things when buying a country house: fence geometry, pool safety, vet infrastructure. The right Absheron house closes all three. 2026 checklist and prices.

1. Breeds suited to Absheron

Absheron is hot, windy, coastal. Five fitting breeds: Caucasian shepherd (guard), Kangal / kaan-dog (local, ideal), labrador (family), beagle (small yard), border collie (active). Not suited: bulldog, pug (can't cope with heat), husky (summer kills them), long-haired teddy types (suffer at 40 °C).

2. Fence — 4 rules

Realistic: 1) height — mid breeds 1.6-1.8 m, large 2 m; 2) bottom gap — no more than 5 cm (dogs dig under); 3) material — dense mesh/concrete, wood is chewed through in 3 years; 4) gate — self-closing (spring).

3. Pool safety

Dogs can swim, but often can't exit (claws slip). Two fixes: 1) ramp — a rubberised non-slip ramp in a corner (300-800 AZN); 2) low fence around the pool — only in families with both kid and dog (1,200-2,800 AZN, 25 m²). Ideally both.

4. Plants — what's toxic

Five toxic species on Absheron: oleander (7 leaves are lethal), cycas, lily, tulip bulb, rhododendron. Remove from the yard or fence them off. Seasonal Absheron plants (fig, olive, tamarisk) — safe.

5. Veterinary and infrastructure

Mardakan has 3 clinics: VetClinic Mardakan, Absheron Pet (Shuvelan), Baku Vet Center (near Bilgah). Vaccines — 60-150 AZN/year, spay/neuter — 180-450 AZN. Food 24/7 (Bravo, Pet Shop Mardakan) or delivery.

A dog-friendly yard is a decision before you buy, not after. On viewings treat the dog as a measuring instrument: in 20 minutes you'll assess fence, pool and plants.

• Fence with bottom and top gap checked.
• Pool — exit ramp in place.
• No toxic plants in the yard.
• Vet clinic within 10 minutes.
• Streets walkable — low traffic.
