Kids' pool safety on a garden house: depth, cover, fence
WHO data: 78% of drownings among 2–4-year-olds happen in home pools with adults present. It's not about depth — 10 cm of water is enough. It's about time: 20 unsupervised seconds. Here are five engineering fixes that remove the human factor.
1. Gentle step-in entry
Ladders are the top injury source. Look for a built-in staircase, 4–5 steps, 60+ cm wide, 25 cm deep — a child sits down instead of falling.
2. Dedicated shallow zone
A 40–70 cm shallow area with its own floor. L-shape or stepped basins work best.
3. Folding safety cover
An automatic roller cover costs 2,500–5,500 AZN, a manual one 800–1,800 AZN. Holds up to 200 kg — a child can run across it.
4. Perimeter fence
A permanent 1.1–1.2 m fence around the pool with a locked gate. Legally required in most of Europe for kids' rentals.
Extra layer: motion sensor over the water (Poolguard, Aqua-Sensor). Triggers a siren on a fall. 300–500 AZN, 30 minutes to install.
5. Non-slip tile around the coping
Wet porcelain is ice. Look for R11+ anti-slip and edge textures. Specialised materials cost 20–30% more but pay back on one avoided injury.
What to check in a finished house
- Ladder type (built-in, not portable).
- Presence of a shallow kids' zone.
- Existing or installable cover.
- Coping tile — textured or smooth.
- Fence or space to install one.
